Emelya’s village considers her bad luck. Not even the dingiest fishing boat will allow her on board, turning her island home into a prison. After spotting a ship in danger nearby, Emelya risks her life to save the crew…and then takes the opportunity to jump aboard and seize a chance at adventure.

But she soon learns she didn’t just join the crew of a ship—she joined their quest to find a legendary colossal dragon. Smaller, tamer dragons may exist everywhere (heating forges, creating fair winds for fishing ships, and acting as pets and beasts of burden) but this is the the kind of fantastical beast that turns men into heroes. It sounds impossible, and the further north the ship sails, the more they battle storms and monsters from the icy depths. Captain Anders is determined to protect the crew at all costs, but Prince Erik is leading the mission, and he will settle for nothing less than a legendary dragon.

He has good reason. Erik’s only chance at saving the realm is to take the crown for himself—and the only way to do that is to prove that the gods have chosen him with the blessing of a dragon of legend. Only a few radicals think the wild dragons are still alive. Only the prince believes he can find one of the colossal monsters in the icy sea. But not a single person expected the dragon to bond with Emelya instead of the prince...or what fire that one stunning twist of fate would rain upon them all.
